shoppers for fukushima

scattered around tokyo
the other prefectures
maintain antenna shops
specialising in their province's goods and crafts
hokkaido's sells cheese
shizuoka's tea
osaka's key-chains of comedians
and grandmother's slang

today
brought a tear to my eye
a queue outside its door
inside packed with people
buying apple juice peach
pies sake seasalt chocolate
cookies phonestraps cake
paying for 110yen purchases
with a 10,000yen note
and telling the clerk
to put the change
in the donation box
others coming in
just to hand over
pachinko winnings taxi fares
the money they would have blown
in near-by ginza's clubs

not since
the panic-buying aftermath
have i seen a shop
so full of people buying in bulk
but this time
they're doing it
for all the right reasons
